Notes from the Club Historian:
Tucked within the gently rolling hills of Watchung, New Jersey, the Watchung Valley Golf Club carries with it the soft whispers and echoes of golf's golden age.
Founded in 1898 originally as the Park Golf Club in North Plainfield, its rich journey beautifully mirrors the profound evolution of American golf throughout the decades. A modest yet charming 9-hole course, expertly crafted by the renowned Tom Bendelow, who was affectionately known as the "Johnny Appleseed" of golf design, marked its early days and laid the foundation for its history.
By the 1920s, the relentless wave of urban expansion forced a significant move, and with it came the ambitious desire for something grander and more extraordinary. Enter Seth Raynor, an exceptional architect whose remarkable genius shaped golf courses from the picturesque Fishers Island to the prestigious Yale University. Though Raynor tragically passed away before any work began, his extraordinary vision for Watchung Valley—complete with his iconic and innovative "template" holes—was ultimately brought to life under the dedicated stewardship of Marty O’Loughlin. The course opened its doors in 1927, quickly earning swift acclaim for its subtle yet deep strategy and bold, captivating design.
Nearly a century later, restoration architect George Waters undertook the ambitious task of reviving Raynor’s original vision, honoring its deep historical soul while subtly modernizing the course to meet the needs of today’s game. In conjunction with Watchung’s enduring charm and character, the club finds itself in distinguished company, positioned alongside other New Jersey gems like Somerset Hills, which is renowned as an A.W. Tillinghast masterpiece. Watchung Valley stands proudly as a compelling bridge between the rich traditions of golf’s past and the promising future that lies ahead.
