Notes from the Club Historian:
Established in 1898, Wannamoisett Country Club in Rumford, Rhode Island, has a storied legacy in American golf. The original 9-hole course, designed by Willie Campbell in 1899, was reimagined by the legendary Donald Ross in 1914, expanding it to 18 holes. Ross returned in 1926 to refine his design, creating the challenging layout that endures today.
The course's reputation was cemented when it hosted the 1931 PGA Championship, further solidified by its annual hosting of the prestigious Northeast Amateur Invitational.
In recent years, golf course architect Andrew Green has undertaken restoration projects at renowned courses such as Oak Hill Country Club's East Course, Interlachen Country Club, and Lookout Mountain, earning acclaim for his meticulous restorations of classic designs.
Rhode Island boasts other historic courses, including Newport Country Club, one of the five founding clubs of the United States Golf Association, and Shelter Harbor Golf Club, known for its classic design and natural beauty. These courses, along with Wannamoisett, contribute to the state's rich golfing heritage, offering unique challenges and preserving the traditions of the game.
Wannamoisett Country Club remains a testament to Donald Ross's architectural brilliance, standing alongside Rhode Island's historic courses as a cherished venue that continues to challenge and inspire golfers from around the world.
