People have said Colorado’s Front Range is the new California for years. Escaping the dry heat of Los Angeles and the crowds of the North Coast, more natives of the Golden State are moving to the mirages below the mountains that creep up and down I-25 like bentgrass from Fort Collins down to Trinidad.
Fortunately, the aesthetic and execution of the great California golf courses have also followed the trend.
Mimicking the sloping fairways that crisscross dusty arroyos and ravines at places like Riviera, Los Angeles Country Club, and Pasatiempo, Ben Crenshaw, and Bill Coore found CGC’s 18 holes on a 400-acre pasture in the Denver suburb of Parker by following the cattle trails. With an appreciation of Eastern Colorado’s high desert ecosystem that resembles central Texas paired with a ski season, Coore and Crenshaw fashioned a layout that fascinates bird-watchers and birdie-seekers alike.
Dotted with stands of Ponderosa and blooming yacca plants that frame many of the dramatic and varied putting surfaces, Colorado is one of middle America’s most exciting contemporary golf course projects. Along with Sand Hills, Ballyneal, CapRock Ranch, and Greybull, Colorado Golf Club has blossomed nicely through a steady downpour of great architecture in the Great Plains.
And I guess they have California to thank for the storm.
